生产原料乳酸是从玉米淀粉制得，故也称为玉米纤维，PLA纤维是在美国著名的谷物公司Cargill公司研制成功的玉米聚乳酸树脂的基础上，在1997年该公司和美国Dow Polymers公司合股成立了 Cargill Dow Polymers公司，全力发展了聚乳酸原料，到2002年聚乳酸年产已达14万吨，生产的PLA纤维商品名为Ingeo。日本钟纺、尤尼契卡和可乐丽公司生产的PLA纤维商品分别为Lactron、Terramac和 Plastarch，美国杜邦公司和孟山都等公司也开始开发PLA纤维。目前，商业化生产的PLA纤维是以玉米淀粉发酵制成乳酸，经脱水聚合反应制得聚乳酸酯溶液进行纺丝加工而成。PLA纤维之所以受到众多纤维公司和消费者关注，并显示强大的生命力，主要PLA纤维有许多突出的优点： 
（1）原料来自于天然植物，容易生物降解，降解产物是乳酸、二氧化碳和水，是新一代环保型可降解聚酯纤维。 
（2）有较好的亲水性、毛细管效应和水的扩散性； 
（3）模量和弯曲刚度是涤纶一半，故手感柔软； 
（4）有良好的回弹性、抗皱性和保形性； 
（5）限氧指数较高（L0I 24-29），点燃后自熄性好、燃烧发烟量低，有较好阻燃性； 
（6）有防紫外线能力，紫外线吸收率低； 
（7）折射率低、染色制品显色性好；
